I came with a carrier bag of letters going back fifteen years and left with everything sorted into labelled folders and a written list of what I still needed to find. The session was unhurried and Margaret never made me feel embarrassed about the state of things. Very useful starting point.

The filing toolkit has been genuinely useful. I was sceptical about a physical folder system but the labels and checklists are well designed and I have actually kept it up for six months now, which is unusual for me. The setup session was helpful — short and focused.

Attended the evening series in April. I hold pension-related documents from three countries and had little idea how they related to each other. The sessions did not tell me what to do — they were clear about that — but they gave me enough context to have a much more useful conversation with a financial planner the following month.

I came on behalf of my elderly mother, who has documents scattered across different institutions. The session helped me understand what categories to look for and gave me a simple system to bring her records together. The facilitator was patient and answered every question I had.

The evening series is quite different from what I expected — more practical than academic. We spent real time going through what different document types actually are, which nobody had ever explained to me clearly before. The printed materials are well written and easy to follow at home.

I purchased the toolkit as a gift for my father, who was approaching retirement and had never organised his papers. He used the setup session with me and said it was the first time someone had explained the difference between all the different letters he had been keeping. He now uses the folder consistently.

PARTICIPANT JOURNEYS

How it unfolded for three participants

CASE STUDY 01 · PAPERWORK OVERVIEW SESSION

The situation

A British expatriate had been living in Bangkok for twelve years with pension-related correspondence from three UK employers sitting in an unsorted box. He was approaching sixty and wanted to understand what he had before speaking to a financial adviser.

What happened

In a single 100-minute session, the documents were sorted into three employer folders, duplicate letters were identified and set aside, and a summary checklist was produced listing what was present and what he had not yet located (state pension forecast, one employer's annual statement).

The outcome

He left with organised folders and a clear list of what to request. Three weeks later he wrote to say the adviser meeting had been "twice as productive" because he arrived with documents already sorted by employer and year.

"I wished I had done this five years ago. Two hours and I finally knew what I had."

CASE STUDY 02 · PERSONAL FILING TOOLKIT

The situation

A Thai woman in her early fifties managed her retirement savings across two Thai providers and had started receiving correspondence about a former employer's occupational scheme. New documents were arriving regularly and she had no system for keeping them.

What happened

The toolkit was personalised during a 45-minute setup session. Categories were adjusted to reflect her specific providers. The annual review checklist was adapted so each provider appeared as a named tab rather than a generic category.

The outcome

Eight months after setup she reported that the system had held up — new correspondence was filed within a day of arrival and she used the review checklist once, in January, to check all accounts were active.

"Having a folder with my name on each tab made it feel like a proper system rather than a temporary arrangement."

CASE STUDY 03 · INFORMATION EVENING SERIES

The situation

An Australian in his late forties knew he had retirement contributions in both Australia and the UK but did not understand the difference between the types, what documents to keep, or how they might be accessed in future. He wanted understanding before doing anything.

What happened

Over six evenings, the series covered the main categories of retirement documentation common in both countries, what each document type typically contains, how they are usually structured, and what gaps are worth filling. His specific documents were not discussed — the series used general examples — but the context was directly applicable.

The outcome

By the end of the series he had a clear picture of what categories of documents he should hold for each country and had used the resource pack to start gathering them. He booked a follow-up Overview Session two months later to sort what he had collected.

"The evenings gave me a framework. After that, everything else made more sense — including conversations with advisers."
